'Agneepath' a tribute, not a remake: Karan Johar

'Agneepath' a tribute, not a remake: Karan Johar
More than a remake, the new "Agneepath" is a tribute, says filmmaker Karan Johar, whose late father Yash Johar had made the original 1990 movie.

"'Agneepath' is not a remake because it is a tribute," Johar told reporters here Monday at the launch of the new version's trailer.

Actors Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra and Rishi Kapoor, who play key roles in the movie, were present at the launch.

For Karan, remaking "Agneepath" was an emotional decision as he wanted it to be a commercial hit. His father's version of the film had failed to click at the box office even though it had won a national award for Amitabh Bachchan for his performance in the role of the angry young man, Vijay Dinanath Chauhan.

The 39-year-old filmmaker says in his version of "Agneepath", which has been directed by first-timer Karan Malhotra, he has added a lot more to the script.

"The basic plot of 'Agneepath' is the same, and the character sketch of the protagonist, Vijay (Hrithik) and antagonist Kaancha Cheena (Sanjay) is the same, but we have built new angles to it, and have added new characters to the script as well," he said.

The action-packed movie will release Jan 13, 2012.

Honoured to receive doctorate: Dhoni

Leicester, Aug 30: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was conferred an honorary doctorate on August 29 by the De Montfort University (DMU) after India won the Twenty20 practice match against Leicestershire here.
The World Cup-winning Indian captain was lauded for his exemplary leadership qualities and achievements before he became an Honorary Doctor of Letters at a ceremony here. The Indian team won the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 Championship, the 2007-08 Commonwealth Bank One-Day series, and most recently lifted the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, under Dhoni’s captaincy.
Dhoni, who also led India to the No. 1 Test team status – a ranking they enjoyed before losing the recent Test series to England 0-4 – has recorded the longest unbeaten run as captain. He also holds the record for most number of catches in an innings and for scoring the fastest century scored by an Indian wicketkeeper.
In 2008 and 2009, Dhoni was named the ICC's One-Day International Player of the Year.
"I am amazed and honoured to receive this award," Dhoni was quoted as saying on receiving the doctorate.
"I see this award as an honour for not only me as the captain of the Indian cricket team but as something for the whole team to be proud of," he added.
Speaking about the award, vice-chancellor of DMU, Professor Dominic Shellard said, "De Montfort University is honoured to join with our key partner, Leicestershire County Cricket Club, in recognising Mahendra Dhoni's significant sporting achievements, in the presence of many of our staff and students."
Having won the three practice games ahead of the only T20I to be played on August 31 and the ODI series starting September 3, the Indian skipper and his troops will be looking to redeem themselves in the limited overs section of the tour after the demoralising whitewash in the Test series against England
